Mining map of Inyo County. Scale 12 miles to an inch [caption title]. San Francisco: Office of the Daily Report, n.d. [circa 1884]. Single sheet, 40 x 45 cm, folded to make six panels. Printed map accompanied by six short columns of printed description. The printer's imprint at lower right corner within border reads: "Lith. Britton & Rey." This state is "colored, in covers $1.00." Published to promote the potential mineral wealth of Inyo County and the recreational value of the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada in the Mount Whitney region. The map names and defines the boundaries of the county's mining districts based on data provided by J. H. Crossman and several others acquainted with the area. The four-column "addendum" presents Keeler's impressions of the high country in the vicinity of Mount Whitney based on a hunting and fishing excursion in the back country. Though brief, the description is notable for inclusion of a very early reference to the Sierra Golden Trout (Salmo aguabonita) as "found in a special stream ..." and "... having bars of gold running lengthwise on the sides ... with bright red spots ..." Enclosed in a paper folder titled "District / Mining and Descriptive /Map / of Inyo County / California." Folder has a small chip at one corner, the corners are a little rounded, and there are a few short splits at folds; the map has several short splits at fold intersections; very good. Enclosed in a custom clamshell box with leather spine label. (#157216).
