(#158833) THE FAR FORESTS: TALES OF ROMANCE, FANTASY, AND SUSPENSE. Joan Aiken.

THE FAR FORESTS: TALES OF ROMANCE, FANTASY, AND SUSPENSE. New York: The Viking Press, [1977]. Octavo, cloth-backed boards. First edition. Collects fifteen stories. One of her best collections of short fiction for young adults. Most of these stories are in A TOUCH OF CHILL (which follows) and A BUNDLE OF NERVES (which precedes). The collection is like her other US collection, NOT WHAT YOU EXPECTED (1974), in that it doesn't correspond exactly to any UK first edition. "Although THE WINDSCREEN WEEPERS (1969) is Aiken's only collection of supernatural fiction written for an adult audience, her horror fiction for young adult audiences constitutes an unjustly neglected body of work despite receiving high critical praise from John Clute and others. Aiken is a first-rate prose stylist, and her stories are subtle, nuanced gems. Her collections of supernatural fiction are a major contribution to the genre. She puts most supernatural writers for adults to shame." - Boyd White. Barron, ed., Fantasy and Horror (1999) 7-3. A fine copy in fine dust jacket with hint of wear along part of the upper rear flap. A lovely copy and scarce thus. (#158833).
