First edition. The author's third collection of short stories, all with South Seas settings, several with supernatural motifs and dark tones. Russell's first collection, THE RED MARK AND OTHER STORIES (1919; UK 1921 as WHERE THE PAVEMENT ENDS) was praised by Conan Doyle as "the best book of short tales by any debutant since Kipling's 'Plain Tales'" (quoted on book jacket). Bleiler (1948), p. 241. Hubin (1994), p. 708. A fine copy in about good pictorial dust jacket with several chips from edges, largest 40x30 v-chip at upper spine end with loss of most of title. Nevertheless the jacket is fairly nice and the front panel is intact except for a chip from the upper right corner. (#159175).
