"FINAL COMMAND" [short story]. TYPED MANUSCRIPT, SIGNED (TMsS). 39 leaves, (first ?) carbon copy, revised throughout in van Vogt's hand. Not dated, but circa 1949. A presentation copy inscribed on the first leaf: "This is the / original copy of / this story, which / will appear in the / special November issue / of Astounding Science Fiction / Westercon, Oct. 2/1949. / A. E. van Vogt." A pioneering AI story in which robots (mankind's machine slaves which have evolved into their own human-like species) achieve equality with their makers. The story was first published in ASTOUNDING SCIENCE FICTION, November 1949. Its first book appearance was in THE ROBOT AND THE MAN, edited by Martin Greenberg (1953). It was collected, with other van Vogt stories, in MONSTERS (1965). Paper clip marks to recto of first leaf and verso of last leaf, overall very good. (#160989).
