DREAM ENGLISH: A FANTASTICAL ROMANCE. London: Constable & Co. Limited, [1917]. Octavo, pp. [1-12] [1] 2-106 [note: first two leaves are blanks], original drab boards with gray linen shelf back, paper label printed in red affixed to spine panel, all edges untrimmed. First edition. The author's first book of fiction, a loosely structured novel -- almost an extended prose poem -- with exotic paraphernalia (Nordic, Celtic, Hellenic, etc.) and hints of the fantastic, generally all color and no shape. "This is the only novel by the Catholic poet Childe (1890-1952), from early in his career. It is borderline fantasy, and it is mainly, as its title suggests, a romance about some unreal (or dream) English people ... Certain passages are exquisitely written, but after a while, the unrelieved high style begins to drag ... " - Doug Anderson. Bleiler (1978), p. 43. Not in Reginald (1979; 1992). Cloth worn at spine ends, boards worn at edges, lettering on spine label faded, a very good copy. (#161890).
