A TREASURY OF GREAT SCIENCE FICTION. Garden City: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1959. Octavo, two volumes, cloth-backed boards. First edition. 1049-page anthology of modern SF published between 1938 and 1958, collects four novels (RE-BIRTH by John Wyndham, THE WEAPON SHOPS OF ISHER by A. E. van Vogt, BRAIN WAVE by Poul Anderson, and THE STARS MY DESTINATION by Alfred Bester) as well as twelve novelettes and eight short stories by Ray Bradbury, Robert A. Heinlein, Philip K. Dick, Theodore Sturgeon, Arthur C. Clarke, Henry Kuttner and others. "This generous selection" includes "shorter works, most overlooked by other anthologists. Offered repeatedly as a bonus for book club enrollment, this anthology has given many readers their first in-depth introduction to SF." - Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-1407. A fine set in nearly fine/fine dust jackets; the jacket for volume one has a 50 mm vertical scratch and closed tear to the spine panel, the jacket for volume two is fine. Although not otherwise indicated, this copy, probably a review copy, belonged to Sam Moskowitz and has his initials written in red ink on the front panel of each jacket. The first edition of this important anthology is rarely seen in such nice condition. (#162437).
First edition so stated in each volume.
