First edition. Most of the material printed here was published earlier in INTERPRETATIONS OF LITERATURE (1915), APPRECIATIONS OF POETRY (1916) and LIFE AND LITERATURE (1917). Three pieces are first collected here: "The Ideal Woman in English Poetry," "The New Ethics," and "Note on the Influence of Finnish Poetry in English Literature." The text is based on lecture notes kept by Hearn's students. BAL 7971 (noted issue 1). Bookplate affixed to front paste-down and small 1921 Christmas gift inscription at top fore-edge corner of front free endpaper.
