Octavo, pp. [1-2] [1] 2-136, printed in double columns, seventeen inserted plates with illustrations by Louis Huard, original pictorial white wrappers printed in brown, light brown and black. First edition. Criminous story: theft, murder, pursuit by the police, a young miscreant hounded to death -- a suicide by poison. Ross published an earlier detective novel, A PRIVATE ENQUIRY (1870). Charles Henry Ross (1842?-1897) wrote considerable comic fiction in addition to a handful of sensation novels. He edited JUDY, a rival to PUNCH, from 1869 until the late 1880s. He was the creator of the immensely popular Ally Sloper, the first comic strip character in English. Armorial bookplate of James H. Graff of Baltimore, Maryland, affixed to the inside front wrapper. Wrappers worn at edges, two small chips from top edge of front wrapper, spine panel chipped with some loss of lettering, a very good copy. (#164560).
