The United States with an excursion into Mexico handbook for travellers ... With 25 maps and 35 plans. Third revised edition. Leipzig: Karl Baedeker, Publisher. London: Dulau and Co., 37 Soho Square, W. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 153-157 Fifth Avenue, 1904. Small octavo (16 x 10.7 cm), pp. [i-v] vi [vii] viii-xvi [xvii] xviii-ciii [civ] 1-660, 25 maps and 35 plans (28 folded), original red limp cloth stamped in gold and blind, front endpapers advertise other guide books in the series, all edges marbled. Third edition, enlarged. The first Baedeker guide to the United States and the first originally written in English, by J. F. Muirhead, the English editor of the Baedeker guides, was published in 1893. Baedeker lived in America in 1890-1893. He visited nearly every state and territory in the Union while preparing this guidebook. Founded in 1827, Baedeker guides gained popularity during the second half of the 19th century (so much so that Baedekering became part of everyday language). They were an invaluable and essential part of "civilized travel" in the fin-de-siecle. Baedeker was known for both its accuracy and attention to detail. Included in each are intricate colored fold-out maps and floor plans. Baedeker's comments and recommendations open a fascinating window into the mores of a world now past. This third edition, published in 1904, is expanded to 660 pages, with 25 maps and 35 plans (28 folded). The Yosemite region, including excursions into the backcountry, is found on pages 574-582. Includes an inserted map, "Yosemite Valley," scale 1:123.000 (1.94 miles to an inch). Early owner's book label affixed to front paste-down, later owner's name on verso of front free endpaper, "alte auflage" (old edition) rubber stamped on title page and struck through with ink strokes. Touch of wear to edges of cloth, but a remarkably nice copy with maps in superior condition. (#164653).
