(#164804) MISTER ST. JOHN: A NOVEL. Raoul Faure.

MISTER ST. JOHN: A NOVEL. New York, london: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1947. Octavo, pp. [1-4] [1-2] 3-279 [280-284: blank], original tan cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black, fore and bottom edges rough trimmed. First edition. A Faustian deal with the Devil theme with the usual results -- you can't beat the Devil. Basically a love story with excessive use of adjectives, adverbs, and metaphors (i.e. purple prose). The author's deservedly forgotten second novel. One wonders why Harper published this -- save for the fact that his first novel, THE SPEAR IN THE SANDS, was widely and enthusiastically reviewed. Bleiler (1978), p. 71. Reginald 05242. A fine copy in very good dust jacket with light wear at edges. (#164804).
