On yellow card stock mount measuring 8.2 x 17.0 cm. Title label affixed to verso reads: "California Views. No. 13 / Big Tree in Mariposa Grove, 94 feet in circumference. / Published by E. & H. T. Anthony & Co., / American and Foreign Stereoscopic Emporium, 501 Broadway[,] New -York." From Yosemite expert John Carpenter: "Charles L. Weed's 1859 set of 40 (42 taken but only 40 published) salt Images of Yosemite represents the most important photographic event in Yosemite history and may very well be the most important stereographic expedition in California history. Individual stereo views are scarce, some much more than others. My personal favorite is this one. It is James Mason Hutchings posing, for scale, in the Mariposa Grove for his friend and employee Charles Weed. Hutchings, acting as guide, had contracted with Weed to accompany him to Yosemite Valley to photograph points of interest for his 'Hutchings' California Magazine.' The trip was a success. Weed's images filled his magazine's pages and in 1860 Anthony and Company purchased the stereo negatives, immediately issuing the full set minus two numbers, 16 and 25. It is assumed these two glass plate negatives were lost or damaged in transit." Light soiling to the mount, very good. (#164824).
