Bancroft & Company, 1871. 15.8 x 10.8 cm (12mo), pp. [1-4: blank] [1-5] 6 [7] 8-256 [i] ii-lviii [advertisements], advertisement for "Joseph Gillott's Steel Pens" printed on light yellow paper is affixed to the rear paste-down, original cream boards printed in red and black. First edition, second issue. The 1872 issue with "changes for 1872" printed on both sides of an inserted leaf and "CORRECTED FOR 1872" printed along the upper edge of the front cover. Of two known states of this issue, this one does not have two plates, one in color, inserted in the advertising section. Pages [7]-71 comprise a guide to Yosemite Valley and the Calaveras, Mariposa, and "southern" giant sequoia groves. Describes northern routes to the valley with rates for hotels, livery, and guides. Several of the advertisements promote businesses associated with the Yosemite travel industry. Currey and Kruska 5. Circular stamps of "Schreiber & Howell, Sacramento," dated 10 July 1872, on the front paste-down and on the title page. Simon Schreiber and Josiah Howell were pioneer California general agents who organized The Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Company of California (now Pacific Life) which incorporated on 2 January 1868. Very fragile binding worn at edges, two gatherings a bit proud, a very good copy. Only a few copies of this early guidebook have survived. This is the only known copy of this variant of the second issue. (#164873).
