MALLET COMPOUND S. P. FREIGHT ENGINE SIERRA GRADE. Real photo post card (RPPC). N.p., n.d. Postmarked Sparks, 16 March 1910. Addressed to Mr. R. Leslie Snaith in Carson City, Nevada. Sparks, Nevada, was a railroad town founded in 1904 and incorporated in 1905, the eastern terminus of the Southern Pacific's Sierra Division. A photograph of No. 4002, a cab forward 2-8-8-2 Mallet-Consolidation compound expansion locomotive which entered service in March 1910 (the month this card was written) to move freight over the Sierra Nevada. This card was sent by "Geo." (a Southern Pacific locomotive engineer) who says "Hello Les! / This is one of our / latest. A machine shop / on wheels. / I had her mate / 4003 the day Hazel and / [?] came over to see me / off. ..." Very good, or better. (#165026).
