(#165143) THE GENTLEMAN IN BLACK, AND TALES OF OTHER DAYS. With Illustrations by George Cruikshank, and Others. James Dalton, John Yonge Akerman.

THE GENTLEMAN IN BLACK, AND TALES OF OTHER DAYS. With Illustrations by George Cruikshank, and Others. St. Louis: Edwards & Bushell, 1857. 12mo, pp. [1-4] [i-iii] iv [1-3] 4-392, illustrations by George Cruikshank and others, original pictorial red cloth, front, spine and rear panels stamped gold, salmon endpapers. First U.S. edition. This combined edition of Dalton's THE GENTLEMAN IN BLACK (1831) and Akerman's TALES OF OTHER DAYS (1830) was first published in 1840 by London publisher Charles Daly. While neither Daly's nor Edwards & Bushell's editions are scarce, both are of interest as they include thirteen short stories by Akerman, including supernatural and Gothic tales, not found in Akerman's 1830 edition of TALES OF OTHER DAYS. Cloth chipped at spine ends, corner tips worn, gilt tarnished, first gathering loose, some scattered spotting to text block, a poor copy. Scarce. (#165143).
