First British edition. The British edition was preceded by the U.S. edition published earlier in 1888 by Belford, Clarke as THE PROFESSOR'S SISTER: A ROMANCE. The US and UK 1888 editions are both quite scarce. Hawthorne's last important neo-Gothic romance.
