A religiously-oriented short novel of the trial and vindication of a young resident of "Gold City," a fictitious mining town in the Sierra foothill region. Much of the story takes place in and adjacent to Yosemite Valley. Pages 89-96 comprise a short story, "The Taking In of Martha Matilda" by Belle Kellogg Towne, which is not set in the Sierra.
