Memorial of J. M. Hutchings, praying a grant of lands in the Yosemite Valley, California. February 13, 1871. -- Referred to the Committee on Public Lands. February 21, 1871. -- Ordered to be printed ... [caption title]. 24x15.3 cm, pp. [1] 2-3 [4: blank]. A single sheet, 24x30.6, folded to make four pages. At head of title: "41st Congress, 3d Session. Senate. Mis. Doc. No. 72." Hutchings petitioned Congress to confirm his title to land in Yosemite Valley. Between 1868 and 1871 several bills were introduced and legislation in favor of Hutchings twice passed the House but failed in the Senate. Hutchings outlines his case in this memorial stating that he has offered his land to California for "fair valuation" and now asks that the request of the Yosemite Commissioners be denied and that "the act for his relief now before the Senate, be promptly passed, so that he may no longer be harassed by the continuous effort and 'sharp practice' of the Commissioners to deprive him and his family of their lawfully acquired and beloved home in Yosemite ..." Currey and Kruska 343. Several light stains, old mailing folds, a good copy. (#166051).
