Hutchings' tourist's guide to the Yo Semite Valley and the Big Tree groves for the spring and summer of 1877. San Francisco: A Roman & Co. No. 11 Montgomery Street, Lick House Block, [1877]. 16.3x11.6 cm, pp. [1-2] [1-3] 4-102, frontispiece, inserted map, original decorated black cloth, front and rear panels stamped in blind, front panel titled in gold. First edition. A guide to Yosemite Valley and the Calaveras, Tuolumne, Merced, and Mariposa Big Tree groves. Currey and Kruska 173. A very good copy. This copy is missing the advertisement for "Hutchings' Tourist Agency for the Yo Semite Valley and the Big Tree Groves ..." printed on both sides of a single sheet of lavender paper stock tipped in on the recto of the frontispiece of most copies. Enclosed in a custom cloth box with leather spine label. This book was considered to be "scarce" when a copy was auctioned in 1923 by Anderson Galleries -- to date one of three copies to be offered at auction, one of which lacked the purple advertising insert and was passed. (#166054).
