First edition. Title page misdated "MCMXLIV." Carrie LeConte was the daughter of Joseph LeConte, an eminent geologist, for many years a faculty member of the University of California. Carrie's journal was written during the LeConte family's five week visit to Yosemite Valley and the Calaveras big trees in the summer of 1878. From the original "field" notes she rewrote the journal, making corrections and additions, and incorporating over sixty pen and ink drawings in the text.
