The first book appearance of the essay comprised pages 43-63 of the 1903 edition of California and the Californians and the Alps of King-Kern Divide. Jordan also wrote a similar article, "The Kings River Canyon and Alps of the Great Divide," which was published in Sunset for April 1900. For another account of the trip see Vernon L. Kellogg, "A Stanford Party in the Kings River Canyon, " which was printed in the November 1899 issue of Sunset. The six photographs of the High Sierra were taken by Joseph N. LeConte.
