Romance of the highways of California unusual and interesting facts and stories about the golden state by Commander Scott. Pasadena: Commander Scott Productions, 1945. 22.8x15 cm (octavo), pp. [1-13] 14-307 [308: blank] [309-320: appendix], illustrations, maps, original blue cloth, front panel stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in black and gold, pictorial endpapers. First edition. Printer's imprint on copyright page: "PRINTED BY / GRIFFIN-PATTERSON COMPANY / GLENDALE, CALIFORNIA." Signed by Scott on the half title page. An informal travelogue seemingly directed to readers of all ages. The first book in Scott's projected "Romance of the Highways" series. Commander Scott, who served in the British Navy and the R. A. F. during World War I, was a world traveler and radio personality. His "Romance of the Highways" was a popular, long-running Sunday morning radio show. The emphasis of the chapter "Mountains-Valleys-Deserts," pp. [247]-307, is the Gold Rush country and Death Valley but there are scattered references to the High Sierra, mainly its eastern slope along highway 395 from Lone Pine north to Lake Tahoe. The Commander was quite impressed by the Mammoth Lakes region, "a world to which not even the Swiss Alps are comparable." A few leaves are creased, minor except for vertical creases in pages 269-270, damage occurring during the binding process it would appear, otherwise a very good copy in a pictorial dust jacket with internal tape reinforcement along top and bottom edges and some sunning to spine panel.
