Limbaugh, then director of the John Muir Center, University of the Pacific. Revised versions of fourteen papers prepared for a conference held in April 1990 at the University of the Pacific on the life and work of John Muir. Includes several papers which focus in whole or in large part on the Sierra Nevada: "John Muir and Vertical Sauntering" by Arthur W. Ewart; "Muir and Geology" by Dennis R. Dean; "Botanical Exploration of California from Menzies to Muir (1786-1900) with Special Emphasis on the Sierra Nevada" by Nancy M. Slack; and "After Yosemite: John Muir and the Southern Sierra" by Paul D. Sheats. The standout contribution is Slack's paper on California botanists. A fine copy in nearly fine dust jacket that is just a bit rubbed and dust soiled. (#166109).
