(#166110) Redwood classic by Ralph W. Andrews. RALPH WARREN ANDREWS.

Redwood classic by Ralph W. Andrews. New York: Bonanza Books, [1958]. 26.5 cm, pp. [1-10] 11-174 [175-176: blank], 238 illustrations, cloth. Bonanza edition, first printing. A reprint of the 1958 Superior Publishing Company edition. An illustrated history of the lumber industry in the Sequoia groves of California during the nineteenth century. Emphasis is on operations in the stands of Sequoia sempervirens of California's coast range, but some coverage of logging in the giant sequoia groves of the Sierra Nevada is provided. Includes material on the Kaweah Colony, the Millwood-Converse-Hume area of Tulare county (largely derived from Lizzie Gamlin McGee's Mills of the Sequoias [1952]), and the felling of the "Mark Twain" and "General Noble" trees (illustrated with photographs taken by Tulare county cameraman Charles C. Curtis). For eleven summers Curtis operated a photographic gallery at Big Stump and at Millwood, producing a series of fine photographs of lumbering operations in the area during the 1880s and early 1890s. A fine copy in fine dust jacket. (#166110).
