(#166158) Timberline country the Sierra high route by Steve Roper. STEVE ROPER.

Timberline country the Sierra high route by Steve Roper. San Francisco: Sierra Club Books, [1982]. 15.5x10.8 cm, pp. [1-6] 1-3 [4] 5-288 [289-290: blank] 6 illustrations (including the frontispiece), 6 maps plus 24 pages of topographical maps following page 288, original stiff gray wrappers printed in metallic blue, rounded corners, perfect bound. First edition. A guide to a 195-mile route for hikers "that remains in close proximity to timberline, avoids major trails wherever possible, and yet requires no particular mountaineering skills." Much of the route, which roughly parallels the John Muir Trail and involves cross country travel, extends from Kings Canyon north to Twin Lakes. The chapter "Early Exploration of the High Sierra," pages 42-103, provides a concise, excellent summary of High Sierra exploration. One of the Sierra Club's "totebooks." A fine copy. One of my favorite books. I have traversed much of terrain described in this book in fair weather and foul, including a 1960s Sierra Club high light bivouac in a snow storm between Scylla and Charybdis, the two guardian peaks at the head of the Enchanted Gorge, "one of the wildest [and remote] canyons in the range."
