First published in 1973. This second printing adds a "Foreword to the Second Edition" by Herb Rhodes, Director of the California Department of Parks and Recreation, dated "Sacramento, 1976." Pages 15-67 comprise a survey of the natural history of the giant sequoia. The remainder of the book, "Giant Sequoias and Human History," provides a detailed history of the Calaveras groves. The lengthy campaign (1900-1954) to place the groves under public ownership is emphasized. This campaign resulted in the protection of the North Grove in 1931 and the addition of the South Grove to the Calaveras Big Trees State Park in 1954. A fine copy with unprinted acetate dust wrapper as issued. (#166164).
