An important contribution to the historical literature of the High Sierra that documents the origin and meaning of the names given to many of the peaks, lakes, meadows, passes and other features of the Sierra landscape, limited on the north by the divide separating the Tuolumne from the Stanislaus watershed and on the south by vicinity of Olancha Peak. A revised and much enlarged version of three articles that appeared in the annual issues of the Sierra Club Bulletin for 1923, 1924, and 1925. A useful supplement to Farquhar's compilation is Erwin G. Gudde, California Place Names: A Geographical Dictionary (Berkeley and Los Angeles: University of California Press, 1949). Information for a number of Gudde's Sierra Nevada references was obtained directly from Farquhar or from his personal "field copy" of Place Names of the High Sierra. Wrappers just a bit tanned, overlapping edges lightly worn, a very good copy.
