A prominent and highly influential early twentieth-century California geologist, Andrew Cowper Lawson (1861-1952) is best known as the editor and co-author of the "Lawson Report," a study of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake published in 1908. For students of the geomorphology of the Sierra Nevada, a disappointing work as there are few references to Lawson's pioneer work in the range. Modern geologic knowledge of the southern Sierra Nevada began with the publication of his paper, "The Geomorphogeny of the Upper Kern Basin," in 1904. This was followed by "The Geomorphic Features of the Middle Kern, published in 1906, a study of the geomorphic features south of the junction of the Little Kern and Kern rivers (see pages 80-81 of Vaughan for a brief account of these papers). A very good copy. Provenance: a fine association copy with a presentation inscription by Vaughan to pioneer Sierra Nevada zoologist Tracy Irwin Storer (1889–1973), known for his books and articles on California wildlife and the ecology of the Sierra Nevada. Storer was a professor of zoology at the University of California, Davis, for over 30 years. The prospectus for the book is tipped in on the rear paste-down. Additionally, a presentation copy of a photocopy of a 24-page typewritten memoir of Lawson by his friend Charles L. Camp is enclosed in a pocket affixed to the rear free endpaper. (#166196).
