Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company The Riverside Press Cambridge, 1915. 20.7x14 cm, pp. [1-2: blank] [3-8] 1-193 [194] [195: blank] [196: printer's imprint], original dark green boards, white paper label printed in black affixed to the spine panel. First edition. According to the publisher's records, 330 copies printed. Mrs. Jeanne C. (Smith) Carr, wife of University of Wisconsin professor Ezra Slocum Carr, had a profound influence upon Muir's career. According to Linnie Marsh Wolfe, Son of the Wilderness: the Life of John Muir (1945), page 79, "More than anyone else who came into John Muir's early life she became his teacher in the humanities. She formed the bridge between the crabbed isolation of his boyhood and the world of men he would have to live in. By her unfailing tact and faith in his genius she directed his aims and helped fit him for leadership." The earlier letters collected here were written before Muir went to California in 1868. Yosemite was a constant theme in those written after his arrival in California. This book was privately published for Mrs. Wanda Muir Hana, elder daughter of John Muir, to prevent publication of a selection of Muir's letters to Mrs. Carr by George Wharton James. BAL 14770. Kimes 331. Front endpapers tanned from laid in clipping (review of the book, The New York Times Book Review, 18 April 1915), else a fine copy in very good dust jacket with 28x45 mm v-chip from upper left cover of font panel, some light wear along upper and lower edges and some internal tape mends.
