Histories of eight nineteenth-century Pacific Coast narrow gauge railroads important in the development of west coast commerce and industry, all situated in California unless otherwise noted: Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad, Lake Tahoe Railway & Navigation Co., North Pacific Coast Railroad, Sumpter Valley Railroad (Oregon), South Pacific Coast Railway, Ilwaco Railway & Navigation Co. (Washington), Pacific Coast Railway, and Pajaro Valley Consolidated Railroad. Several, North Pacific Coast Railroad and South Pacific Coast Railroad, operated in coastal California Redwood regions and two, Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad and Lake Tahoe Railway & Navigation Co., operated in the Sierra, both in Nevada County.
