A history of the Ah-wah-nee-chees, including information on their customs and beliefs, based on knowledge derived from Clark's friendship and close association with the Indians of the region. The formal presentation, while factual and informative, suffers from the lack of personal notes or experiences of Clark himself. Clark was persuaded to write this book, his first, by W. W. Foote and the book's dedicatee, Charles Howard Burnett. Burnett supplied the financial backing and managed the details of publication. Of interest is the ten page introduction by friend and Yosemite Commissioner Foote, which provided a biographical sketch of Clark.
