First edition. Eight essays by Austin on California, including "The High Sierra and the Sage-brush Country," pp. 147-174. Yosemite is the subject of five of Palmer's paintings included here. About half of the other paintings are California mountain scenes, including those in Southern California, the Coast Range, Lake Tahoe and vicinity and Northern California, including the Trinity Alps and Mount Shasta. This edition of the book and its map were printed in Scotland. The book was reprinted by Houghton Mifflin Company in 1927 as The Land of the Sun: a Book About California. Cowan (1933), p. 23. Rocq 16661. Tiny 1915 gift inscription at the top right corner of the front free endpaper. Small, faint stain on rear cover, spine ends and corners lightly rubbed, a bright, nearly fine copy.
