Denison, [1888]. 18.4x15 cm, pp. [1-2: title leaf] 1-11 [12], 30 plates mounted on 15 leaves with 46 illustrations from photographs printed by the Forbes Co., Boston, Massachusetts, original pictorial salmon cloth, front panel stamped in black and gold, rear panel stamped in blind. First edition. A popular album of western views, the subject of most being California, many along the routes of the Central Pacific and the Southern Pacific railroads. Includes five pictures of Yosemite Valley and one picture of the Wawona big tree in the Mariposa grove. A number of the views are of points of interest in northern California along and adjacent to the Southern Pacific Company's new "Shasta Route," the railroad between San Francisco, California, and Portland, Oregon. The 12-page "description of views" was written by E. McD. Johnstone, a publicist who worked in the passenger department of the Southern Pacific Company for about eight years, writing and illustrating advertising copy for its publications. The Denison News Co. had locations in San Francisco and on the Oakland Pier. Rocq (1970) 15890. Early owner's signature dated March 1900 on the front paste-down.
