First edition. One of several books providing an account of Ballou's trip around the world. Maturin Murray Ballou (1820-1895), journalist, traveler, author, whose "chief distinction in American journalism lies in his founding and editorship of GLEASON'S PICTORIAL, later called BALLOU'S PICTORIAL, one of the earliest American illustrated newspapers ... In 1882 he circumnavigated the globe, and he took many other tours until his death ..." (DAB). Ballou's visit to Yosemite Valley, "where the grandeur of the Alpine scenery is unsurpassed," is given on pages 6-9. Although not germane to this study, it should be noted that two chapters not included in the table of contents, are devoted to illustrated descriptions of Yellowstone National Park and the Muir Glacier in Alaska.
