LOS ANGELES AND VICINITY. ISSUED BY THE LOS ANGELES CHAMBER OF COMMERCE UNDER THE DIRECTION OF A COMMITTEE WHOSE LABORS WERE INAUGURATED AND INSPIRED BY MRS. FRANK WIGGINS, OF LOS ANGELES, AND BY MRS. ROY JONES, OF SANTA MONICA, THROUGH WHOSE RESOURCEFUL LEADERSHIP THE UNDERTAKING HAS BEEN COMPLETED. Los Angeles: Engraving, Printing and Binding by the Out West Company, [1904]. 20x27.5 cm (oblong octavo), pp. [1-6] (not paginated), 100 plates (2 folding) with illustrations from photographs, original tooled suede covers with attractive art deco-style design on front panel, string tied. First edition. An elaborate pictorial album promoting Los Angeles and vicinity presented by the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce to the "national and international representatives gathered at St. Louis for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition." The 100 photographs were chosen to illustrate "the verdure and scenery of the semi-tropic climate, the rare historical features, our homes, and the progressive business conditions the distinguish the city and surroundings. Here may be found picturesque old missions founded by the fathers; the varied mountain and ocean scenery; broad cultivated acres; orchards and vineyards burdened with rich harvests; gardens and parks of tropical luxuriance, while, last and best, are the homes of our people -- builded here where, amid smiling, fruitful valleys, the snow-capped mountains meet the peaceful sea and the glorious sunshine is an ever-present inspiration." The two folded plates are the two-panel "Ocean Park Strand Still Water Bathing and Boating" and the larger three-panel panorama "Business Center of Los Angeles, 1904." Small private owner's signature at upper edge of first leaf. Mild crease at lower fore-edge corner of first leaf, a nearly fine copy. An excellent copy of a stunning photographic record of southern California at the beginning of the twentieth century. (#166604).
