Coast to coast by motor[.] By Paul E. Vernon. London: A. & C. Black, Ltd., Soho Square ... New York: William Edwin Rudge, Fifth Avenue, 1930. 19.2x12.7 cm, pp. [i-vi] vii-ix [x] xi [xii] 1-115 [116], 8 inserted plates with color illustrations from photographs, 1 map (folded), original blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black. First edition, U.S. issue with "RUDGE" printed on the spine panel. Account of a forty-two day automobile trip across America and return in the summer of 1929. Vernon and a friend drove a Benz touring car from New York, westward to the Oregon and California coast by way of Yellowstone National Park, returning home via Albuquerque, Kansas City, and Ohio, a distance of 9305 miles at a total cost of about $600. The trip to Yosemite and Sequoia/General Grant is described on pages 51-64. This was Vernon's second trip to Yosemite. He was keen to visit Hetch Hetchy, but aborted due to perilous road conditions. Not an interesting narrative, save for the catalogue of food consumed. Vernon was a frugal traveler. Bliss, Autos Across America 53. A nearly fine copy. (#166625).
