(#166755) APPENDIX TO JACKSON'S MAP OF THE MINING DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA ... [cover title]: JACKSON'S MAP OF CALIFORNIA WITH APPENDIX. William A. Jackson.

APPENDIX TO JACKSON'S MAP OF THE MINING DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA ... [cover title]: JACKSON'S MAP OF CALIFORNIA WITH APPENDIX. Livermore, Calif. Thos. W. Norris, December 25, 1936. 15x9 cm, pp. [1-2] [1-3] 4-12 [13-14: blank], original pictorial brown cloth. Facsimile edition. Thomas Wayne Norris (1878-1952) was one of the great collectors of Californiana who, upon retiring, sold his collection of printed material on California and the Far West in a massive 4279-item catalogue printed by the Grabhorn Press and issued by The Holmes Book Company in 1948. According to the brief preface by Norris in this small Christmas keepsake, he acquired a copy of 1850 printing of the map in New York several years ago and "this year (1936) John Howell of San Francisco procured a map with the appendix, here reproduced in facsimile." A second, revised edition of the map and the appendix was published in 1851. Oddly, the Norris catalogue apparently does not list an original copy of the first printing of the map, although an original copy of the 1851 map and appendix are offered (see items 2386 and 2387). The 1850 printing is rare, the 1851 printing is occasionally found and very expensive. The Appendix contains notices of towns and settlements, and a general account of the mines. The appendix is dated December 1849. A fine copy without dust jacket as issued. The folded FACSIMILE MAP to accompany this facsimile of the Appendix IS NOT PRESENT. (#166755).
