Autograph Letter, Signed (ALS). 2 pages, dated 7 October 1890, to Mrs. Captain Francis, written in pencil on both sides of a sheet of blue lined paper. A letter written from a colony member residing in Advance, the colony's main settlement, to a nonresident member residing in San Francisco. In full the letter reads: "Advance Oct 7 1890 / Dear friend Mrs Francis / I heard to day that some party / had offered to buy your share / in Kaweah Colony but don't you / think of such a thing we have / two saw mills here one sawing out / lumber and the other will be at / work in a day or two one small one / and one large one, also a large / planing mill the machinery is all here / and the foundation is all laid built / of lumber of our own manufacturing / on the way here now is a lathe machine / and a shingle mill we have 360 achers [sic] /of land laid off for a city to be / called Kaweah City we are surveying / it off in lots 75 by 150 feet Each / member will have one of these / lots to build on to be his or her own / after they are laid off the map will / be hung up in the Treasurer's office / here and we can go there and pick / out our choice if two happen to Pick / the same one then they will have to / draw [lots?] to see which shall have / it you can buy the lumber to build / with (some we are getting ourselves) / from the Colony with Time Checks / at $7.00 Per Thousand I wish it was / so you could come and see this for / yourself we are having lovely weather / we had a little rain the other day / that started the grass that makes it / look fine we all have lumber for / floors in our Tents and in addition / to that I have built a kitchen on / the back of my Tent got my stove / in it the one I had at 6th street / that and the dishes come very handy / now although the meals at restaurant are only / ten cts I like to cook something to suit / myself once in a while, hoping to hear / from you soon I remain your friend / J M Pierce / [at head of recto]: "PS / Remember / me to / Everybody." Envelope with printed 2-cent circular stamp postmarked "Three Rivers Tulare Co., Cal." [date illegible], addressed: "Mrs Captain Francis / 1405 Bush Street / San Francisco / Cal." On the envelope verso are two San Francisco postmarks dated 8 October [the mail was much faster in those days than now!]. The letter has mailing folds, else fine; the envelope is soiled and stained and roughly opened along the left side. A remarkable letter with fine content. (#166774).
