(#166926) GALEN CLARK AT THE HAVERFORD TREE. [MARIPOSA GROVE OF BIG TREES.]. Galen Clark, Unidentified photographer.

GALEN CLARK AT THE HAVERFORD TREE. [MARIPOSA GROVE OF BIG TREES.]. N.p., n.d. [Circa late 1900-1910]. Two states of the same RPPC, one with caption on image, the other without one. The Haverford tree is in the Mariposa Grove of Big Trees. In June of 1857 Clark, accompanied by Milton Mann, rediscovered a group of big trees which formed the upper of the two groves which Clark later collectively named the Mariposa Grove. Later that summer Clark discovered the lower grove of big trees nearby. While not the first European man to see these sequoia groves, Clark was the first to thoroughly explore and promote the Mariposa Grove. All very good or better. Provenance: Ken Prag collection. (#166925).
