Summer suns in the far west a holiday trip to the Pacific slope by W. G. Blaikie, D.D., LL.D. London, Edinburgh, and New York: Thomas Nelson and Sons, 1890. 18x12.3 cm, pp. [1-2: blank] [3-9] 10-160, Frontispiece (folded), original blue cloth, front panel stamped in black and gold, spine panel stamped in gold, rear panel stamped in blind, white endpapers with floral pattern printed in brown. First edition. The Very Rev William Garden Blaikie DD LLD FRSE (1820-1899) was a Scottish theologian, writer and social reformer. On a long holiday in 1889 Blaikie and his wife, then in their sixties, traveled from Edinburgh to the United States and thence from Philadelphia to Southern California to visit a married son. Blaikie's account of their trip includes a good-natured, detailed account of the tedious, poorly coordinated, and overly expensive trip to and from Yosemite by stage at the end of the rail line at Raymond, pp. 51-66. Travel and accommodations are described in detail; interesting observations by a perceptive visitor. Cloth worn at corner tips and top edge of outer front joint, outer front joint rubbed, lower front corner bumped, front cover a bit dusty, a very good copy. (#166946).
