First edition. The Very Rev William Garden Blaikie DD LLD FRSE (1820-1899) was a Scottish theologian, writer and social reformer. On a long holiday in 1889 Blaikie and his wife, then in their sixties, traveled from Edinburgh to the United States and thence from Philadelphia to Southern California to visit a married son. Blaikie's account of their trip includes a good-natured, detailed account of the tedious, poorly coordinated, and overly expensive trip to and from Yosemite by stage at the end of the rail line at Raymond, pp. 51-66. Travel and accommodations are described in detail; interesting observations by a perceptive visitor.
