DESERT BONANZA[:] THE STORY OF EARLY RANDSBURG[,] MOJAVE DESERT MINING CAMP by Marcia Rittenhouse Wynn[.] With thirty-three illustrations and maps. Glendale, California: The Arthur H. Clark Company, 1963. 23.5x15.5 cm, pp. [i-vi] vii-ix [x] xi-xvi [1-3] 4-275 [276: blank], 33 illustrations including maps, one folded, original brown cloth, spine panel stamped in gold, top edge stained brown. Second edition, revised. The original edition (1949) has been highly commended by its inclusion among the twenty-five "desert" books chosen by bibliographer E. I. Edwards in his DESERT HARVEST. He comments, "Not too much has been written of the great Mojave Desert ... Marcia Wynn has salvaged from nearly complete obscurity an extremely important chapter in California desert history ... a well-written narrative ... a pleasantly readable style." " While the author accentuates the historical background of the old mining camp of Randsburg, she does not neglect the great Mojave Desert the surrounds it. For here is no meager, apathetic account of this vast desert region. On the contrary, her descriptions are energized first -- by an intimate knowledge of the country she describes; second -- by a native ability to transmit this knowledge in a delightfully entertaining manner. DESERT BONANZA has established itself as an item of considerable importance desert-wise. Not so much has been written of the Mojave Desert region, except -- of course -- with reference to Death Valley and the early emigrant trails into San Bernardino over the Cajon. It is reasonable to assume that DESERT BONANZA may be regarded as the initial effort, of any consequence, to assemble important primary material relating to the huge area surrounding the famous old 'Rand Camp' that had its beginning back on 1896" (Edwards, The Enduring Desert, pp. 265-266). A fine copy in fine dust jacket. (#166976).
