In the chapter devoted to "scenery" Hittell notes that "the places in the state most visited on account of their natural scenery are the Yosemite valley, the big-tree groves, and the Geysers." The Yosemite Valley, with "... more scenes of grandeur and beauty than be found within an equal space in any other part of the world," is described on pages 73-78 and the Mammoth Tree groves on pages 78-83.
