Articles of association, articles of incorporation, by-laws, and list of charter members of the Sierra Club. San Francisco: Sierra Club [The Murdock Press], 1892. 19.8x13.2 cm, pp. [1-4] 5-20, original tan wrappers printed in black, sewn. First edition. At head of title: "Publications of the Sierra Club No. 1." Printer's imprint on page [2]: "C. A. Murdock & Co. / Printers / 532 Clay Street, San Francisco." The Sierra Club was founded by John Muir in 1892 as an organization of like-minded people "to explore, enjoy and render accessible the mountain regions of the Pacific Coast; to publish authentic information concerning them; to enlist the support of the people and the government in preserving the forests and other natural features of the Sierra Nevada." From its inception, the club has been particularly effective in the field of conservation and in popularizing wilderness recreation, an activity the club pioneered. For a well-documented history of the Sierra Club through the end of the campaign to preserve Hetch Hetchy Valley, see Holway R. Jones, John Muir and the Sierra Club: The Battle for Yosemite (San Francisco: Sierra Club, [1965]) and for a definitive history of the club see Michael P. Cohen, The History of the Sierra Club, 1892-1970 (San Francisco: Sierra Club Books, [1988]). Currey and Kruska 297. Wrappers dusty and tanned, small chips from lower corners of front wrapper light stains to fore-edge margins of front wrapper and title leaf, a good copy. (#167201).
