Map title reads: "Map of the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Central California. Publication No. 12 of the Sierra Club. Scale 4 miles to 1 inch. Berkeley, Cal. January, 1896. Copyrighted by the Sierra Club 1896. W. B. Walkup 530 Commercial St. S.F." A large scale map of the central Sierra Nevada with two smaller insert maps, "Yosemite Valley" and "Hetch-Hetchy Valley." The 1896 map combined the details of J. N. LeConte's Map of a Portion of the Sierra Nevada Adjacent to the Yosemite and Hetch Hetchy Valleys and Map of a Portion of the Sierra Nevada Adjacent to the King's River which were issued in 1893 as Publications of the Sierra Club, numbers 4 and 5 respectively. The new map was compiled by LeConte from his observations as well as explorations by Theodore S. Solomons, Lil A. Winchell, Bolton Coit Brown, Lieut. Nathaniel F. McClure, and other members of the Sierra Club. The map was available "on bond paper, folded between covers" (here described), "cut in sections, mounted on cloth, and folded between covers," and "mounted on roller as a wall map."
