A very popular travel book for young readers describing American scenery, including Yosemite Valley, San Francisco, the Great Basin and Utah, Salt Lake City and Mormonism, the Rocky Mountains, Yellowstone, the plains and prairies, mountain scenery in Pennsylvania, the Susquehanna and Delaware rivers, Niagara Falls, Lake Superior, Boston, the White Mountains, Lake George, the Adirondacks, the Hudson River, and picturesque regions of New England. Neither the artists nor the engravers are credited. The description of Yosemite Valley, pages 4-25, includes sixteen illustrations, five full page. One of the smaller illustrations, a picture of an oak tree incorrectly captioned "Redwood Tree," is part of the full page illustration printed on page [11]. A picture of the Calaveras Grove of Big Trees is misidentified as the Mariposa Grove and a view of the Three Brothers from the Merced River is misidentified as Mirror Lake. Many of the illustrations in this book were used earlier in AMERICA ILLUSTRATED edited by J. David Williams. Reverend Bromfield's PICTURESQUE JOURNEYS was reprinted as THE LAND WE LIVE IN, OR AMERICA ILLUSTRATED (New York: Worthington, 1891). A sequel was PICTURESQUE TOURS IN AMERICA ... (New York: Worthington, 1885). Flake 876. Plum 965. A hint of rubbing to spine ends and corner tips, a nearly fine copy. (#167223).
