Report of the Acting Superintendents of the Yosemite National Park, California. J. W. Zevely, Special Inspector, Acting Superintendent from June 17, 1898, to September 24, 1898. Capt. Joseph E. Caine, Utah Volunteer Cavalry, Acting Superintendent from September 25, 1898, to October 29,1898. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1898. 23.4x14.5 cm, pp. [1-3] 4-11 [12: blank], 1 map (folded), original tan wrappers printed in black, stapled. First edition. Map is "Yosemite National Park California," printed by Julius Bien & Co. Lith., New York, with patented lands printed in color. Captain Caine's major recommendations are stiff penalties for trespass and violation of rules on government lands, and that "action be taken at once to secure to the Government the title to all lands within the park" and the "if the outlay required to purchase this land is considered too great, the six townships on the west side of the park, which contains at least three-fourths of the patented land, should be taken out of the park and returned to the public domain." He also reports that the roads and trails in Yosemite Valley are in "perfect condition" the "artificial improvements that are constantly being made detract nothing from the natural beauties," and "the condition of this tract reflects the greatest credit upon the commission in charge." Twenty-five reports were issued annually through 1915. The reports, prepared by the superintendents or acting superintendents of Yosemite National Park, were issued separately and were also collected in the annual reports of the Secretary of the Interior. For a complete checklist of the reports with historical commentary see Farquhar (1948), title 24, pp. 95-99. The 1916 annual report for Yosemite National Park appeared in the Annual Report of the Superintendent of National Parks ... (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1916). Reports issued after 1916 appeared in the Annual Report of the Director of the National Park Service (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1917-). A fine copy. (#167449).
