Ninth edition. A popular work that had at least thirteen editions through 1841. The engraved frontispiece is "Boston and Bunker Hill, from Chelsea;" the "two full-page woodcuts show the "Vermont State House, Montpelier" and the "Landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth, December 22, 1620." There is a 9-page description of the routes to the White Mountains, including travel by way of the Hudson River and the Champlain Valley. John Hayward (1781-1862) was a New England author, born in Boston, whose principal published work was on religion and on geographical indexing. Howes H 354. Sabin 31074. Bent, p.48.
