First edition, first printing. Muir's second book. An aesthetic appreciation of the landscape, flora, and fauna of the parks and forest reservations of the American west. The emphasis is upon Yellowstone, Yosemite and Sequoia national parks, although there are references to a number of forest reserves. The book is composed of a series of ten articles first published in the ATLANTIC MONTHLY between 1898 and 1901. The map is "Map Showing Locations and Extent of the Forest Reserves & National Parks in Western United States to 3rd, August, 1901" engraved by C. J. Peters & Son, engrs., Boston. There were three printings of this book which retained the 1901 date on the title page and the statement "Published November, 1901" on the copyright page. These printings are identified by the collation of the sheets: (A) First printing, [11, 24, 3-258, 262]; (B) Later printings, [1-248]. This is a first printing (992 copies printed 23 October 1901). BAL 14752. Kimes 237. Early gift inscription on the front flyleaf: "Herman F. Vickey. / Christmas, 1901. / From Beth Harrington." A fine copy. Quite uncommon thus. (#167586).
