John of the mountains the unpublished journals of John Muir edited by Linnie Marsh Wolfe. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company The Riverside Press Cambridge, 1938. 21.2x14 cm, pp. [i-vii] viii [ix] x [xi-xiii] xiv-xx [xxi] xxii [xxiii-xxiv], [1] 2-459 [460: blank], 8 inserted plates, original decorated white buckram, front and spine panels stamped in blue and brown, fore-edge untrimmed, top and bottom edges trimmed. First edition. A special copy, signed by editor Linnie Marsh Wolfe on the half title page and signed by dedicatee Wanda Muir Hanna, John Muir's daughter, on the front free endpaper. A leaf of manuscript in John Muir's hand is tipped in between the copyright page and the dedication page. Muir's journals, written between 1867 and 1911, provide a record of his wanderings, his observations, and his scientific research which spans nearly the whole of his career as a naturalist. Wolfe's selection begins with Muir's first California journal, written in 1869, and includes most of the important later journals, with the exception of those recording his foreign travels. For the most part, the journals are impersonal, but as a whole, they record Muir's progress as a naturalist and humanitarian. BAL 14781. Kimes 379. A fine copy in nearly fine dust jacket with mild wear at edges and clipped price. Neither BAL nor Kimes mention these special copies. Very rare. (167590).
