Two spiral bound artists' sketchbooks, 8 1/4 x 5 and 8 1/4 x 5 7/8 inches respectively, with 74 pages of pen and ink sketches and watercolor and ink preliminaries, executed in the 1950s. The Talent Art Tablet with handwritten title "IN THE REDWOODS JUNE 21, 1952[.] KINGS RIVER CANYON JUNE 23, 1952[.] SKETCHED ON LOCATION ... " , dated "March to August 1952," has 28 leaves, of which 26 have pen and ink sketches or watercolor drawings on the rectos and 2 have handwritten notes not related to the drawings. The Strathmore Alexis Drawing tablet "MT. WHITNEY PORTALS[.] KERN RIVER CANYON[.] SAN SIMON STATE PARK[.] BIG SUR ST. PARK," dated "Mar - 57 to Aug 21 - 57," has 24 leaves with detailed pen and ink sketches on both sides. The first sketchbook includes 10 watercolor and ink drawings and 1 pen and ink drawing of the Giant Forrest region of Sequoia National Park made in June 1952, including sketches of Giant Forrest, Crescent Meadow and Moro Rock and the Kaweah River canyon, and 3 drawings, 2 watercolor and ink drawings and 1 pen and ink sketch, of Ryan's camp on Sheep Creek in Kings Canyon, June 1952. The second sketchbook includes 12 leaves with pen and ink sketches of a trip to Lone Pine and Mount Whitney in the southern High Sierra in June 1957. "Born in Austin, Texas, on May 23, 1894. Following service in World War I, Ryan came to Los Angeles from Seattle in 1919. He studied art at UCLA and Otis Art Institute followed by a year of study in Amsterdam, Paris, and Rome. His illustrations were published in the LOS ANGELES TIMES, McCALLS, LADIES' HOME JOURNAL, and on the covers of WESTWAYS. The last 30 years of his life were spent in Escondido in San Diego County. His illustrations appeared in five books on Escondido history written by his wife Frances. He died nearby at Palomar Hospital on Jan. 4, 1982. Ryan’s work includes copperplate engravings, watercolors, pen and ink and pencil sketches; however, he was most successful with woodcuts and greeting cards ...
