FALLS OF NIAGARA AND THE VICINITY ... [cover title]. London, Edinburgh, New York: T. Nelson and Sons, n.d. [1859?]. 15x9.5 cm, 12 plates with color steel engravings some made from photographs, enclosed in printed card slipcase. A first or early printing. According to Dow (p. 1226) the earliest edition was published in 1859. Sabin 52320 records a 64-page booklet published in 1859 with a map, but apparently no plates. The plates offered here were enclosed in printed card slipcase with no booklet. The steel engravings (termed "oil-colour views" by Nelson) were made from photographs as well as from sketches by Washington Friend. "The views are fine and beautifully colored" (Dow). Spotting and soiling to margins of some plates, plates are lightly worn at edges, one plate has a stain on the lower edge just touching the image, the blank versos are tanned as is usually the case with these Nelson engraved views. Nevertheless the views are bright and vividly colored. Only the front panel of the card slipcase has survived. (#167709).
